Latest Act Justly Out Now!

Happy Easter! May the joy of the risen Christ fill your lives during this Eastertide. Welcome to our second Act Justly for 2018 which has turned out to be an extended version as there is just so much news to update you on.

A large part of this issue is devoted to combating modern slavery, from the Archdiocese of Sydney, to the New South Wales Parliament to what you can do to help end the travesty of modern slavery in our time—especially in relation to purchasing slavery–free chocolate this Easter.

We also feature the second instalment of our “Social Justice Corner” which is on the “Life and Dignity of the Human Person” which is a core principle of Catholic Social Teaching.

We update you on the latest census figures which confirm the marked increase in homelessness over the last five years. On a positive note regarding housing, the Greater Sydney Commission has committed to inclusionary zoning for Sydney in its new plans—although it does not go as far as we would like. We also update you on the results of the Sydney Alliance action “Penrith Speaks” regarding affordable housing in Western Sydney.

We also have updates on the status of refugees and people seeking asylum, both those here in Australia and those still confined in offshore detention. In the lead up to Easter we also draw your attention to the plight of persecuted Christians in the Middle East.

We have some positive news on the confirmation of a maritime border between Australia and East Timor—the first successful treaty negotiation of its kind in the world.

As always we also bring you news on what the social justice groups in our diocese have been up to and keep you apprised of upcoming events—especially our next Social Justice Day on 5th May 2018 as well as our campaign to help you in Caring for Creation through Solar.

If you or any of your friends are active in the social justice sphere, please get in touch with us so we can include your news in our next newsletter, or if you like come out and visit you to assist you in your endeavours.
