What is the Sydney Alliance and 2 Day Training?

The Sydney Alliance is a citizens’ coalition whose mission is to provide our community with a voice to express our common values and aspirations for a fair and just Sydney.  The Alliance is broadly based across religious organisations, community organisations and unions establishing relationships that respect diversity while building a cohesive society.  The Alliance is a non-party political organisation.  Its primary purpose is the ability to act for the common good through the processes of Community Organising.

The Sydney Archdiocese is a founding member – most recently you might have connected with the Alliance at our public assemblies on affordable housing, or maybe you’ve taken part in a Table Talk on ‘Changing the Conversation’ around refugees and asylum seekers.

This 2 day institute explores why and how we are building this Alliance in Sydney. Partner organisations, like the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney encourage individual leaders to participate. You will not only gain skills to take back to your social justice ministry, but also skills that will help you build a deeper sense of community and connection in your parish more broadly.  Two Day training is also a fantastic place to connect with other organisations from faith, union and community backgrounds and learn how community organising is the bridge we can use to work together on our common ground.

This 2 day institute is based on the philosophy and practices developed by the Industrial Areas Foundation in over 65 years of successful organising experience.  These ideas are translated to an Australian context.

Topics at the 2 Day Foundations training include:

  • Community Organising:  based on the history and tradition of our religious, union and community organisations
  • Relational Organising:  individual relational meetings, listening assemblies, research, negotiation and action
  • Strengthening our Organisations: building a culture that is relational, action oriented and reflective/learning
  • Using Relational Power in the public sphere to take collaborative action on common issues.

Hundreds of Sydney Catholics have done this training over the last decade or so. This time, there will again be other Sydney Catholics participating and Kim from the JPO will be one of the trainers, so there will be some familiar faces! Come, join us!
